Tradition Is A Good Gift

I have fun Christmas errands to run this week, like grabbing pine roping to hang around the front door and going to Tractor Supply for birdseed and a “woof woof” ornament for a special little boy. I really want to get him one ornament each year, and then when he grows up and has his own tree, he can take them with him. His wife will appreciate the head start to her collection, in the same way I was blessed when my MIL gave us my husband’s childhood ornaments when we first got married. This is our third Christmas together. I suppose I could go buy a ton all at once to fill the tree, but there’s really no fun in that. We don’t have ornaments on the bottom half of the tree this year anyways, hahaha.

I’ve really been enjoying the anti-consumption commentary floating around this year. I had no idea people were buying entirely new decor each year. I thought we all were digging out our Christmas boxes, unwrapping the same items from old wrinkled tissue paper, exclaiming, “oh I forgot about this one!” and then placing it in the same spot it always goes, year after year after year. Well, that’s how my childhood was at least, and how I intent Christmas to be for my children.

It is the first day of the month and the first day of the week. I feel a little behind on my usual homemaking chores because of decorating over the weekend, but not by much. I was able to reset the house with a good vacuum of all the rugs and a scrub of the bathroom this morning. I look forward to a calm, peaceful week of catching up. I’ve kept my decor very simple this year, but I’m sure I will add touches here and there throughout the season.

I just finished Dear Christmas Mothers as my first Christmas book of the season, and it was so lovely and inspiring and really got me thinking that I can write more casually here, and therefore more often. Now I’m onto The Substitute Guest for my next read.

Well I am off to fold towels while watching old Martha Stewart reruns before naptime is over :) Talk soon!
